Wildland Urban Interface (WUI)
The wildland urban interface is the zone where human development such as homes, businesses, and infrastructure meets or intermingles with wildland vegetation, such as forests, grasslands, and scrublands. It is an area that is particularly vulnerable to wildfires, as natural fuels are in close proximity to structures and communities.

What They Are and Why You Need It
Prairie Urban Interface (PUI)
Land Conservation
A property needs defensible space to reduce the risk of wildfire damage by creating a buffer between structures and surrounding vegetation. This space helps slow or stop the spread of fire, protecting homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Reducing fire intensity by clearing flammable materials like dead trees, and brush lowers the amount of fuel available for the fire, decreasing its intensity as it nears structures.
The Prairie Urban Interface is the zone where urban or suburban development meets open grasslands, prairies, or rangelands. Similar to wildland urban interface, the PUI poses unique wildfire risks due to the presence of highly flammable grasses and human activity that can ignite fires.
Land conservation through multiple techniques is a proactive approach to maintaining healthy ecosystems while reducing wildfire risks. These methods involve selectively removing excess vegetation to improve ecological balance, enhance biodiversity, and promote resilience against fire, pests, and disease.
